Lichen organ

The organs in the Licheń temple are the largest organs in Poland. They were made in the Organ Works "Zych" in Wołomin. They consist of five parts: the main organs, the organs of the western and eastern aisles, and two smaller parts above the presbytery. The main part of the organ itself weighs about 50 tons and is 13.25 meters high. A tin pipe is installed here, which is the largest organ pipe of this type in Poland. Its diameter is 31 cm, length 783 cm, and weight about 150 kg. There are 6,577 pipes in the main organ. Combining all the organ parts together, we get 12,323 pipes and 157 votes.

The organ in the basilica was played, among others, by a world-famous organist, living permanently in Belgium, prof. Karol Gołębiewski. The professor is a laureate of renowned international organ competitions in Munich, Nuremberg, Brugge, Speyer and Rome. Prof. Karol Gołębiewski graduated from the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, receiving the highest distinction in his specialty. With the Warsaw company DUX, he recorded an album on the Lichen organ featuring French music from the second half of the 19th century. XIX century.

- Our Lady of Licheń is the patroness of organists - explained Fr. Janusz Kumala, MIC, the curator of the Lichen sanctuary, tells how during World War II it was a lichen organist who hid the miraculous image of the Mother of God from the German Nazis and destruction. - I do not know a place or event that would allow an organist to save a miraculous painting, neither in Poland nor in the world. Hence, such a Festival is organized here and many organists from Poland and abroad come to play and pray here. The beauty of organ music reflects the beauty of the heart, said the curator.
